Conversation with Community: Traumatic Brain Injury
The National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center (NIWRC) invites you to an upcoming Conversation with Community (CWC), which will center the lived experiences of community members to address the ongoing challenges Native women experience due to violence. This CWC will focus primarily on traumatic brain injury (TBI) among Native women survivors of domestic violence.
Violence, including traumatic impacts to the head, strangulation, and choking, is one of the leading causes of TBI. These actions can cause temporary to lifelong damage to the brain, resulting in behavioral/cognitive symptoms, altered perception symptoms, and/or negatively impact physical symptoms. Common symptoms caused by TBI are concussions, memory loss, balance difficulties, irritability, inability to focus or pay attention, headaches, and other less visible effects. The impact of TBI can be debilitating, interfering with daily function and disrupting the dynamics of relationships. Through this Conversation, NIWRC aims to identify the most effective ways to support survivors living with TBI.
This will include a facilitated discussion in a semi-structured group interview with participants who have lived experience or have provided support to survivors. Who this CWC is for (age restriction is 18 years or older):
- Tribal domestic violence advocates who have experience working with American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) victims-survivors who have a TBI
- AI/AN survivors of domestic violence who have lived experience with a TBI
- Tribal healthcare providers who work with survivors of TBI
