OFVPS recognizes May as Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness of the alarming number of Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit individuals, and people who have gone missing or have been murdered in the United States.

“MMIP Awareness Month seeks to shed light on the often overlooked and marginalized experiences of Indigenous people and their communities, highlighting the urgent need for justice, support, and action to address this ongoing crisis. Through education and advocacy, grassroots advocates across the nation call on us to wear red to make visible those who have disappeared and have been murdered. By increasing awareness and responding with a sense of urgency, we can work towards dismantling the systemic barriers that have perpetuated this crisis and create a future where all Indigenous people have access to the safety, justice, and support they deserve.”

Why Join? NIWRC Director of Policy, Kerri Colfer, will join us to talk with participants during the Coffee and Conversation about how programs can use their funds to meet the needs of MMIWR survivors and increase community awareness.

Who should sign up? Tribes and tribal organizations that are recipients of Family Violence Prevention and Services (FVPSA) grants. Advocates, Directors, Managers, Staff, and Financial management are all welcome.

The ongoing purpose of these calls continues to be:

  • Increasing resources for tribes and tribal organizations to meet the needs of American Indians and Alaska Natives surviving domestic violence, dating violence, and family violence.
  • Increasing resources for tribes and tribal organizations to expand the workforce of advocates and partners to meet the needs of AI/AN survivors.
  • Increasing public awareness about primary and secondary prevention of family violence, domestic violence, and dating violence,
  • And culturally specific activities.

We look forward to seeing you all there!
